How to shop a wedding market from far away

An open ledger, a brass tape measure and a phone on a worn wooden shop counter by a window.

The best sessions begin with a good brief. Before your shopper walks into the first boutique, they should know what you are looking for, what you are not, and what you will do with what they find.

Start with the occasion, not the item

Say what the outfit is for: the ceremony, the season, the people who will see you in it. “A lehenga” is a category; “something I can dance in, in a colour that works for a daytime ceremony” is a brief.

Give a budget range and a date

A range helps your shopper skip shops that will not fit and spend the time on ones that might. A date tells them how much to ask about alteration time.

Ask for what photographs cannot show

Colour on a screen is unreliable. Ask your shopper how the fabric moves, how heavy the embroidery is, what the lining feels like, and whether the colour in the shop matches the colour in the photograph.

Decide later

There is no pressure to buy anything. A good session leaves you better informed, whether you buy that week, return for a second session, or decide not to buy at all.

See it for yourself.
